The topic came up during a discussion with Bret Baier about illegal immigration. Baier tells Harris that Rachel Morin was among the young women "brutally attacked and killed" by some of the men who were released at the beginning of the admin "well before a negotiated bipartisan bill."
Among those men, allegedly, was Victor Martinez-Hernandez, 23, who was arrested in Oklahoma and charged in Morin's death.
Baier argues that had those men been properly vetted, Laken Riley and others probably would not have been killed.
"No question about that, and I can't imagine the pain that the families of those victims have experienced for a loss that should not have occurred," Harris said during the interview. You can watch Harris' interview with Baier here.
Harris added that the U.S. immigration system has been broken since before Trump's presidency: "It needs to be fixed."
In response, Morin's mom, Patty Morin, had scathing words for the VP.
"Vice President Harris had one job—secure our border—and she fell asleep at the switch," she stated, according to her lawyers. "The fact is, the Biden-Harris Administration rolled back border policies that would have prevented a flood of illegal immigrants, including the man who murdered my daughter.
"Rachel would still be alive today if they had taken action. It is too late for words. We need accountability, not excuses.”
Morin was killed in August last year while jogging on the Ma & Pa Heritage Trail in Bel Air by Victor Martinez-Hernandez, who was arrested earlier this year in Oklahoma.
The illegal immigrant is also accused of assaulting a young girl and her mother since coming into the country.
"Vice President Harris swore an oath to protect Americans when she took office, but she failed—not only in her duty but in her moral responsibility to safeguard the lives of those she promised to defend, leaving families like ours shattered and betrayed," Patty Morin continued.
"She allowed my daughter’s alleged killer to enter this country, and now countless American families will suffer unending pain as the result of illegal immigrant crimes."
According to the family's lawyers, they see Harris' appearance on Fox News and subsequent statement as "an implicit admission that Rachel's death could have been prevented had the Biden-Harris Administration secured the border."
They said that in the interview, "Harris tried to deflect responsibility, arguing that if a border security bill had been passed nine months ago, tragedies like Rachel’s would not have occurred," a statement Patty Morin agrees with.
"She has had three and a half years of opportunities to make a difference, and now she’s asking for more time to keep failing at the job she’s already neglected for too long," she said.
Her lawyers added: "The fact remains that Rachel’s death was preventable had the border been secure when Harris assumed responsibility for it."
